A Connecticut school custodian is being credited with helping to apprehend a man with a gun outside of an elementary school.

The incident took place outside of the Lincoln Bassett Community School at 130 Bassett St, New Haven on Wednesday, Nov. 8 in the morning.

In a letter to parents and the community, school officials said the custodian noticed the distraught man, who was carrying a weapon, outside the school and approached him.

"He was successful in de-escalating the situation," the letter said.

When New Haven Police arrived on the scene they found a naked man lying on the concrete in front of the school, said Sgt. Cherelle Carr, of the New Haven Police.

"The male appeared to be disoriented. The New Haven Fire Department arrived on the scene," Carr said.

American Medical Response personnel arrived on scene and the man was transported for a psychiatric evaluation.

An investigation revealed that the man was not a legal pistol permit holder and that the gun recovered was stolen. The individual was charged with the appropriate charges related to the stolen handgun, Carr said.

"Students were indoors and did not witness the event," school officials said. "They were safe at all times. We are grateful for the courageous intervention of the staff member."

The man's name has not been released.
